so, is this exactly what it says on the box? does it really work? and - does it matter that the wiring in my house is VERY old and poor lol

what are speeds like?

 looks cool

Yes it does achieve what is stated but the speeds are poor at present and isnt yet a viable solution. Wireless or wired ethernet configurations are still a recommended choice.

Personally i wouldn't agree at all, maybe that was true when the technology was first released but not anymore. It doesn't match wired ethernet for speed however it beats the pants out of current wireless tech.

The new Devolo and Netgear HD kits can stream Hi-Def content at up to 200mpbs, compared to the current high speed 108mpbs wireless speed. The connection is much more stable as its not interrupted by telephone's, walls, washing machines, mobile phones etc etc.

The encrytion is easy to set up, i had them out of the box and encryted throughout a 4 PC network in the space of 15 minutes. The encryption itself is difficult to hack as you have to have a physical connection to the powerline plugs, unlike wireless where someone can sit outside your house hack the WEP/WAP and connect using various programs that are easy to find on the net.

I had non stop problems with wireless because i live in an old house with thick walls, i gave up and bought 2 homeplug kits and have never looked back, it really is so easy to set up and is rock solid, you never have to worry about dropouts or signal strength.

The only point i will make is that i have brand new wiring throughout my house, although i've not heard of any problems from other people who don't have this luxury, its worth asking other users here who use homeplug on older wiring to see if they have any issues.

There's plenty of reviews on the net of the various different makes and models, have a read because i guarantee every single one will say how easy it is, the only downside is price, but i figured it was worth it to lose the hassle of managing a wireless setup.

Yes you do have luxury of a newly wired house allowing a seamless transition. Personally i have tried to trial this in a business environment for a customer in a 10 year old building, nightmare wouldnt be a suitable description.

Thats before you add the extra overhead of encryption.

It may suit your needs for a 16Mbit internet connection but when implemented in anything less than an ideal situation it doesnt yet cut it.

Yes its a brilliant idea but still requires some refinement.

Old or young wiring should not be pertinent - if it transmitss power - its safe - its ok. However, what is pertinent is the wiring layout. For yer average semi (lived in by yerr prolitarienn working masses - yearning to breath free) with yer average 2 ring mains and not to say 2 lighting circuits- then mains will triumph over wireless.
85 Mbps can now be had for £29 a unit
