Hi
Will these work off an extension cable? I am guessing NO but worth a try...

Also, I need to get 3 of them - a fairly decent speed will do me - any reocmmendations - want fairly cheap!

I won't be streaming HD or anything but I may record a program downstairs that will coem to 2.5gb and I will wanan watch it upstairs and so owuld like to copy it over (or stream) fairly fast - i.e within 10-15 mins?

thanks

I have one plugged into an extension cable, says not to but it still works and can't say its any slower than the other two in my home.

I would recommend the Solwise ones rated at 200Mbit/sec, I get around 45Mbit/sec throughput from them when copying files from my server running FreeNas to my PC / Laptop over wired and wireless although speeds obviously depend on the quality of your wiring.

Cheap, perhaps - they are £50 a go although like all things you pay your money and take your choice. I would also avoid the Netgear ones like the plague as they are firstly not standards compliant and I have heard they don't perform very well in noisy environments compared to other brands.

Yeah they work fine on extension leads, I can imagine you might loose some performance if your chaining several together over a large distance but several meters will probably have no effect on the speed, don't buy cheap ones though as you get what you pay for.

I found quite a significant drop in speeds if i use mine through an extension cable, getting the full 85Mb sync atm from one end of the house to the other with them plugged directly into the wall.
Why not have yours plugged into the wall socket, and use a longer ethernet cable?

85Mb/s is enough for streaming full HD movies, and will copy a 2.5gb file in less than 5 minutes.
