The top 14 devices in the GLBenchmark are all PowerVR based device’s. PowerVR now have a massive market share while ATI and Nvidia have droped down to a tiny amount in this market.

I assume PowerVR are bringing this press out in response to Nvidia’s recent APX 2500 press.

Now if only PowerVR would channel the profits back into a desktop card. They completely dominated Nvidia and ATI in the mobile market. Perhaps they stand a chance in the desktop?

It’s not really laptops. But didn’t notice the PDA’s bit. Trying to keep it on topic if PowerVR can beat ATI and Nvidia in other market do you think they have a chance in the PC market? Anyone else wish PoweVR came back to the desktop?

Yeah some of the real old pre Kyro cards where amazeing in the few games they worked in but rubbish in the rest. I remeber the PCX only worked in a handful of games

What did you have the old Neon 250 or PCX, MBX?

hi

loadsa is right it is stagnating a bit . i just hope the 3870x2 and r700 have woken nvidia up and i dont mean with that gx2 malarky.
still got my kyro 2 was almost as powerful as the geforce3 and i only paid £80 for it .
it would be nice for a third g/card manufacturer to come into the mix i think the market is bigger now than ever as more people are more knowledgable

cheers
edit: ive just sent imagetec an email asking them if they would like to reenter the desktop market and spank nvidia and amd lol.

i still have my kyro2.
once a friend and i held #1 on the orb. but the athlon 64 came and no amount of volts can help get an aged barton to compete with that!

it didnt get on with all games...

UT engine games it loved, i used to play UT2K3 maxed at 1024*768 on it and it was lovely. but generals was 2fps at 640*480 min detail :P

I wish someone would come in, its bloody crap, been crap for nearly 2 years now, glad im out of it. :D

You can't be serious. It's been pretty much the same over the last several generations of graphics cards. Yes the Geforce 8 has been out for ages and has yet to be succeded but the GTX when it came out was pretty spectacular, so that sort of even things out, I would say.

Maybe your issue lies more in the software side of things?

I can't see it to be honest. When TBDR had a chance against inefficient z-buffering/ordering they didn't step on the gas and have the "kahuna's" to manufacture series 5.

IMGTEC always want a partner and want to sell their stuff as IP only. They want others to shoulder the risk

Now that ATI and nVidia have designs that effectively nullify 80% of the advantage of a tile-based approach IMGTEC have lost their chance for big desktop market share IMO

the biggest market remains the integrated market.

the Kyro 2 used to get (on average) GF2 pro performance using passive cooling (if you wanted) and 175mhz SDR ram. the GF2 was running hot with a fan and needed expensive and rare DDR to get good speed. even with the far improved memory subsystem on a modern pc, theres a big thermal limit as to what can go in a chipset, and lets say you have dual pc6400 - that 12GB of bandwidth. sounds a lot but the 3870 has ~6 times that ammount, all to itself.

TBR still has a big advantage in this arena. for comparison, imagine having something like an X1800XT integrated on your motherboard with not much more cooling than an old socket7 heatsink..... thats roughly what the difference is. right now nvidia/ati are struggling to put much better than X1300 performance onto motherboards.
