Folks,

Normally when I pre-order xbox games I get games a day earlier, recently started getting back into gaming on the PC and obviously utilising steam where I can, question is if I pre-order on steam is there a benefit of a day early, or is that still only available for delivery type pre-orders?

Specifically talking Deus Ex here.

Usually you get your games AFTER the actual release time if you pre-order through Steam. That is, if the release date is 25th in the US and 29th in UK/Europe, the Steam version often unlocks at around 5-7PM on the 29th. Sometimes they unlock games at midnight on the release day (ie. 29th in this example), but more often you have to wait until the evening. Sometimes, but rarely, games unlock at the same time for everyone and even more rarely that time is before the retail release date. But generally you have 6 to 48 hour headstart with a retail copy compared to Steam copy.

Also Deus Ex is a Steamworks game so you can actually buy the retail copy and it installs to Steam. It's very likely cheaper at retail too.

A lot of PC games now need to activate online before you can play them so even if you do buy it at retail and it arrives a day or so early you still won't be able to play it. This is a generalisation and there are exceptions though they are getting fewer and further between.

Steam will allow pre-loading for some games which is a major plus in my eyes as it allows you to play as soon as it unlocks. I'm not sure how it compares to retail with regards to actual release time but sometimes I have seen it unlock later, I guess it depends on how many potatoes you have.

Is it?

Got a link?

They haven't officially announced it but other digital stores (Gamersgate, Direct2drive) mention on their Deus Ex game page that it it requires 3rd party download which these days almost always means Steam. Actually now that I checked, Game/Gamesplanet digital store specifically mentions that Steam is required.
