The ones that you get from banks/businesses/junk mail etc - how do the companies get charged? I can only assume they only get charged if the envelope is used, if not it would cost a fortune!

Do Royal Mail send an invoice for each one? Is there a cost/size limit? We occasionally get junk mail with pre-paid return envelopes and I was wondering what would happen if I wrapped up a brick and used the return envelope thingy to send it - would the company get charged the whole postage amount or would they get one of those 'the sender didn't pay enough postage so collect from the post office' type letters through?

I've often wondered.

Quink :)

They pay a fixed fee per year for the licence and then there is a charge per item received based on size and weight. Normal sized letters that can be sorted by machine are counted by the machines and billed automatically. Any larger items are counted manually.

So basically any junk mail you get post them back their empty envelope just to be a tool?

I've done this for years and hardly consider it 'being a tool' if they insist on sending me junk mail that I've not requested then they deserve to pay for the privelage, if everyone did this maybe the cost of bulk mailing would rise to the point where they might try some alternatives that don't mean I can't open my door every time I get back from holiday.

Oh and don't get me started on takeaway menus!
