If I was taking the existing fixing off the res wouldn't I risk draining water from the rad above?
no the fixing to the RAD would stay you would use another hole.
Do you really want to be pulling warm case air through the radiator?
if you use the rear fan as an intake to cool the chipset not much else will get warm, but like you say could pull air in from the top and use the rear as an exhaust but then you have the potential of warming up the internals of your case...try it both ways and see what works.
also Bubo makes some good points, personally ive always prefered front bay reservoirs it usually the only place you can see water on my builds as i use coloured tubing.
