Predator: Badlands

*Apparently a deliberate decision to reduce the costs of the VFX, as if the screen is nearly completely black and the creators are black, you don't need to spend so much money on the CGI etc (both Alien and Aliens** managed to do dark scenes and have it so you could make sense of what was going on, and they had relatively speaking tiny budgets IIRC).
I remember this and fairly certain it was for AVP2 not AVP.

I kinda enjoyed AvP for what it was tbh, second sucked mind.

apart from predator being clearly out front I find it hard to order them for me. I enjoyed 2 growing up but can see why it’s divisive, enjoyed the premise for predators even if execution wasn’t great. The predator was utter rubbish, prey was really good and I loved badlands.

This thread has convinced me to go and watch it in IMAX next week. Not expecting much. A comedy for the family with some gore. Modern day tick box film.

I wouldn't call myself an ardent Predator fan, and, as such, I really enjoyed Badlands.

Not too gory for the kids (there was a 7-8 year old sitting in front of me with her parents) quite a bit of humour, and as someone said, quite wholesome.

Had to laugh at the last line!

Saw this last night. It's good fun but a completely different tone to the other films.

I like the alien planet being chock full of dangerous life-forms. Reminds me of the old Harry Harrison Death World books.

To its credit it did more interesting things with the different alien creatures than the new Alien Earth series did.

I give it a generous 5/10, it would have been 4/10 until I read that it was based on the comics.

I think they missed an opportunity to do something really good whilst staying true to the comics, it was just a straight forward action film, nothing noteworthy, won't bother watching it again. Felt a bit lazy, I'm not a writer but I reckon I could do something better.

I think new films are mainly formula driven and this is no exception.

I'd probably have enjoyed it if I was 8 years old, unfortunately I'm not 8 any more.

Actually, I think that's it, you have to watch it with the expectation that it's a kids action film. Power Rangers in Space?

The only really good predator movie is the Arnie original. The sequel with Danny Glover wasn't actually too bad though. The rest, well the less said the better. Worst of the lot was that Shane black film, surely one of the worst films I have ever seen :p

I literally cannot watch AVP.

I mean it, I can't watch it.
I can hear it, but most of the film basically feels like they could have just run the camera in a locked room with no lights for how much you can make out of what is going on*.
I'm half joking, but trying to watch that film requires me to do it at about midnight in December, with the blackout curtains pulled and every light source in the room off (the LED indicator for the NTL box or the Blu-ray player is almost blinding by comparison to some scenes).

**Who even succeeded in making the relatively grainy IIRC film stock that was new/in development work to make the film better and give it a good look (IIRC they got it cheap because it was being tested and a lot of the grain is because the low light performance of the film wasn't as good as some of the other film stocks that had been around for a while but cost more).

Are you referring to the original AVP or the follow-up, requiem because that's dark AF. AVP i watched the other night and its fine in terms of darkness, requiem is incredibly dark on the other hand and hard to watch.
