What do you reckon the PC, phones, etc... is going to be like?

Remember, 12 years ago, most people did not have laptops. Most people had beige boxes and CRT monitors.

IMO...

Smartphones will replace laptops and desktops for most people. This will be the setup for most people.

An average storage will be around 2-3TB for phones. 5-10TB for desktops/laptops.

12-16GB of RAM, an average.

Windows, OSX, Linux, most likely unified platforms of mobile and desktop OS'.

Fanless laptops, SSD will be on all laptops.

5G connections, most carriers will become ISPs basically.

Even a cheap laptop will be incredibly overpowered for a normal consumer

Web apps are going to be even more powerful, most people will store all their data in the cloud.

Everything will have a touchscreen.

Maybe a touch recognition on the phones... recognizes an owner's fingerprints, unlocks.

Google's 3D maps will cover most of the world, it's going to be glorious!

4th gen XBOX, PlayStation 5... will probably be amazing.

Monitors will be REALLY thin, think OLED maximum.

Lots of wireless peripherals.

Hopefully voice recognition/command will be easier to use.

Why bother with 3tb of storage when everything is stored in the cloud?

Personally I'm looking forward to a breakthrough in batteries, sounds boring but a phone that lasted weeks/months without needing a charge would be awesome. Great for electric cars too.

Whilst I never say never, I hate the idea of storing my personal data in 'the cloud'.

I don't have child porn or anything (before anyone starts) I just don't like the idea that my personal files could be easily accessed at any time by some spotty geek who works for one of the cloud service providers. I feel much safer having my data on my hard drive.

low latency led projectors (multi non bezel shizniz)

hoverboards

terraforming capabilities

low latency high speed rpg mmo universe like planetside 2 + star citizen + dayz (but modeled on an actual global scale) holding up to 10,000 players per server

Why bother with 3tb of storage when everything is stored in the cloud?

Purely because Hitachi, Western Digital and others will want to make money.

That's why I wrote that most laptops will be incredibly overpowered for an average consumer.

Even now, laptops ship with 500GB/1TB drives, most consumers don't need anywhere near that much.

Also, while processors are getting faster and more efficient, software is becoming lighter, faster and more efficient as well, Windows 8 is faster and lighter than Windows 7... so it's like a dual attack, hardware is becoming more powerful, software is becoming faster and more optimized. Pretty exciting.

And add to all of that, that as I mentioned, IMO most things will move to the cloud so where all that processing power will go, I don't know.

I would LOVE some real innovation in batteries, but they seem to be stuck. Hardware optimization is more likely than some revolutionary new battery tech.

I personally think the future will roll on towards wireless energy transfer. At least to keep batteries charged till they are used outwith a building or even a city. Small increments like this will give a large longevity to the battery outdoors.

I've often thought about a wireless charging system, a bit like the current mobile telephone network, with masts, except wirelessly sending electricity through the air.

I guess it's impossible though, if it was possible it would cause so much interference :p

(I know it can be done over short distances)

Not so sure about that. By it's nature wireless energy transfer will always be less efficient and produce more heat than the wired version.

We are moving into a world where increasing efficiency and using the least amount of energy as possible is key (climate change and all that).

Whilst wireless energy is pretty cool now (due to it being new), once it becomes mainstream the green brigade will jump on it and guilt trip companies to use wires again.

Don't be daft. Until we have a network anywhere near what they have in the far east (ie Japan/Korea) that aint going to happen. I can barely play iplayer at 2mb/s.

And in 12 years I really can't see BT doing a nationwide fibre roll out.

If we can't download and print sex robots by then, I will be sorely disappointed.

its not as domestic an idea as i think you were after, but I feel that artificial limbs will become a lot more advanced in the next 12 years. recently there was a guy who lost his legs but is now walking with robotic legs. there are also quite a few very advanced robotic arms that have been used to replace the arms of people who have lost them for whatever reason

I was pointing out the conflict in his post, I didn't say it would all be cloud based.
