Im hoping to have a prelude by the end of the week, and everyone says i should take the 2.2 over the 2.0, and make sure i get the Vtec.

I have found a nice 1998 2.2si in good nick. But i have no idea what engine this is? Ok, so its 2.2, but is this the good engine or a non vtec?

Any ideas?

Hi m8

All VTEC cars need a manual box to get the most from them. Get yourself a 2.2 VTEC manual as you can now find nice UK cars for around £1500 and if you bag yourself one with full service history you will have a good car. They are good for 200k+ miles, well built and very strong engine. :)

A 2.2si is an import, plus it may not have VTEC as some of the imports did not have VTEC.
Also remember an import Prelude will cost a lot more to insure and won't have history, so try to stock to a UK model as the difference is only approx 5BHP when you cator for our lower RON fuel.

I wouldn't get the tiptronic - they boxes aren't that great.

A manual will be a lot better.

They did a 2.2 both with, and without VTEC. You can tell by the cam cover - the VTEC one has VTEC written on it ;)

A 1998 will be a 5th gen - I personally prefer the looks of the 4th gen (92-96)

Hi there

Whats your budget?

3k is my limit, i know im pushing it on this budget, but this really is the car im after.

I have found a mk5 in Essex for 2095, with 108k on the clock, silver, standard and 2.2vtec auto - UK car...
Im kinda put off by the price, should i be?

Just keep waiting m8 and with time the right car will come along.

The manual is a lot quicker and more fun, plus less to go wrong. :)

Remember though a UK car saves you a lot on insurance.

You can get one for 3k but 4k gives you a lot more options, but these are one of the best second hand buys going as you get a fast rare car that are pretty much bullit proof. :)

Wicked, so im not being daft for holding out for the 5? It just looks so much nicer, always loved the way they look. I kinda feel like if i settled for a 4 i would just spend all the time wishing i had got the 5 :(

Ahh well, I shall be scouring daily for the right car :) I only want a UK car, its just hard to know if the seller does not state it, and i dont have time to call every advert i see :(

Thanks for the advice!

the regular Si is not vtec. 160BHP.

tiptronic box is "alright" but you really want a manual.

I think all 5th Gen 2.2's are VTECs, the only choices with were a 2 litre non VTEC and a 2.2 VTEC. It's the 91-96 Prelude you have to watch out for 2.2 Si imports which are non VTEC!

Just to echo what Gibbo has said it is worth holding out for a manual! The autos don't make a good use of the engine and the tiptronic is meant to be a sluggish gear change (although I've not tried one)

I know what you mean about prefering the squarer shape, it is a shape thats grown up a lot recently and looks very tidy where as ther earlier car is beginning to get old! However look at one side on and see if you think the bonnet is way way too long!!

There are some import 5th gen 2.2s which aren't VTEC, and are rubbish and not worth the money.

The tiptronic boxes also are not that reliable and most of the time you'll wish it was either a standard auto or you'd gone for a manual.

Im going to see a 1997 2.2vti tiptronic today after work. Its a dark green, not too sure on it yet, but i think i do need to start going to see them and drive a few before I make any decision :)

Will let ya know what i think when i get home :D

Love the 5th Gen looks great almost purchased one a few years back, Manual would be my choice.

I think it would be mine too, but im trying to find one nearby that i can test drive, in my budget
I may have to find one nearer, over budget and see if i can blag a test drive :(

Well, I took it for a test drive, very impressed, I'm very glad I didn't take money with me because I would have bought it there and then! lol

I said I have to look at others before I make my decision, but that I was very interested, and would contact him either way, incase he felt maybe he could move a bit more on price ;)

The sequential box seemed very smooth although I was not really used to the power delivery of the vtec system, it seemed odd waiting for the revs to hit 5k before feeling the power come in. I know I should counter by coming down the gears, but its very new to me.

Steering was so positive and it corners very well, no roll and the 4ws didn't seem to do anything noticable at speed, which was something I was edgy about. I didn't want the back end doing silly things when I was cornering.

The colour is growing on me, in the flesh it looks very dark, green gives the wrong impression for sure. I'm sure I would prefer a silver one, but the peace of mind offered by the hefty service history and many receipts may sway me.

Overall, I think maybe an auto box makes getting the best out of vtec a tad more difficult, but its no biggy.

it really didn't feel like a nearly 10 year old car, the guy said he had worked for honda for 18 years and had one pre-launch in 97. He's a massive honda fan, which was kinda re-assuring, although I don't know why!

Maybe is should hold my tongue untill I drive a manual but I really liked it!
