been playing Football Manager 2010 a lot lately, only got it last week or so and got the toon promoted :)

anyway just been looking at the EPL history and it just reminds me of teams like Chelsea, spurs, villa west ham etc not doing particularly well. off course its always about how your team is doing now, and not 15 years ago but it annoys the life out of me how quick newcastle got worse, because we were always up there above and beyond the fore mentioned teams.

it was not helped with the likes of chelsea buying there success, sir bobby leaving (rip :( ) and then a manager nearly every season.

now we have man city who were in league 1 10 years ago or so, trying to do the same and buy everything.

and not to mention the teams we have in it now, stoke play most boring football i ever saw, hull, bolton, fulham, wigan, portsmouth all teams i would rather not see. it was better with teams like southampton, leeds, wimbledon in there

what ever happened to low wages/low transfer fees and teams playing and winning for pride. dont get me wrong i like the modern game, but i loved the one 10+ years ago even more - especially as we lived up to our entertainers name.

dont know why i wrote all that now, only wanted to show the leagues history, must be the drink typing here not me :o

Back in the 80s when I really really loved the league, I thoroughly enjoyed watching teams like Notts Forest (loved them) , Stoke, Ipswich , Crystal Palace, QPR, Coventry etc. Loved those teams. Many of those teams faded over the last 20 years and dropped down the divisions sadly, must admit that I've always preferred the old First Division over the new Premier League. The old First Division just seemed somehow more national than the EPL (which simply seems to have teams which essentially all come from 3 locales). Got my fingers crossed for Notts Forest this year, would love to see them back in the top flight.

yeah everything seemed more grass roots and localised, even though there were still foreign players etc no where near as much now.

tell you what, i give you £50 if forest get back up in the premier league in the next 3 years and swap places with the likes of stoke - they bring nout to the game.

We piled cash into our toon team?nearly bought the title?

Other teams were buying big at the time though. We bought Ferdinand for £6m, Liverpool paid £8m for Collymore. We paid a world record fee for a player who was 2/3rd best striker in the world, Man City spend £18m on Roque Santa Cruz and an almost record fee for a defender who wasn't even the best at his club.

Newcastle certainly spend some wedge but you can't compare it to the likes of Chelsea and Man City.

aye, footy is a bit boring now. It's a four, arguably two, horse race every season. No huge upsets, no fairytales and no good honest fans at the match.

I don't know if you're being sincere or not? But I agree. :p When Newcastle first got promoted under Keegan we finished 3rd, can anyone see that happening anytime in the future?
