Premiere Pro conforming problem

I'm trying to import a 3GB .wmv file into a Premiere Pro project, and it conforms it when I import it. However for some reason it maxes out my RAM and pretty much freezes my computer. I have 6GB DDR3, and you can see as the conforming progress bar at the bottom goes up so does the RAM usage, until it hits 100% and everything slows to a crawl.

I also have a 1.6GB .wmv file which I tried importing, this time it finishes conforming at about 60% RAM but get this, the % keeps on increasing unless you close Premiere. What the hell is going on here? I can't import these files without all my RAM being used.

Help appreciated.

a wmv will be compressed. When it loads it into the program, itll be loading an uncompressed version I imagine.....that's just my guess from working with images in photoshoped, a 30mb CR2 is worth about 150mb in RAM usage.

Any ideas to get around it? I tried loading the file into Media Encoder and converting it to something else but it still uses all the RAM. Any free programs which can convert .wmv without losing quality?
