I'm about to re-install Windows on a partition that didn't have a copy of Windows installed on it before. It DOES, however, have loads of other junk on it, including a few gigabytes of applications/games and a few large video files. So I thought it'd be a good idea to empty some space near the beginning of the drive for all the system files to go on during Windows installation. I remember Norton SpeedDisk could do that - not automatically, but you could specify which directories you wanted to go where (I typically had it send video files and archives to the end of the disk, after the contiguous free space, and program files to the bit just before the free space, leaving system files at the beginning of the disk for improved access times). Is there any disk defragmentation program that can do that? Can I set one up to empty a few gigabytes towards the start of the partition so Windows can go there? Or should I not bother, and simply defragment the drive after installing Windows?
