Preparing for GTA V

Afternoon, I am looking to upgrade my current system in preparation for GTA V, I am happy with CPU, general performance and stability but realise that I will probably want to upgrade my GPU to play the game at a decent resolution.

Current System...
  • Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 Mobo
  • Corsair HX 850W PSU
  • Intel Core i7 950 (stock speed) CPU
  • Corsair XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600Mhz RAM
  • Noctua NH-D15 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler

Based on information around the web (obviously this could change once released) the system should run the game with decent enough performance.

Questions...
  • Would a RAM upgrade be beneficial?
  • Recommendations on GPU(s), single/SLI setup?
  • If I wanted to overclock the CPU a bit, would an improved heat sink be a good idea?

Any points/advice would be greatly appreciated, I will be keeping Windows 7 and the upgrade budget is flexible (would prefer to keep it below £1,000), let me know if you need any more information.

Cheers

I passed then? :D

Id certainly upgrade you GPU.

And overclock your CPU (i assume its a D14, not D15).. I have a D14 and its a superb cooler, overclocking that chip will release any bottleneck it may have over your (new) GPU.

I think a 7970ghz or GTX 770 would be a good upgrade now, though it may be worth waiting for the new AMD GPU release soon. :D

Seems a big ask to be specced for something that hasn't even been announced yet.

You might be better off saving your money and waiting until it is released or the required specs are announced, you might have more to spend and there will also be newer tech out at the time.

Or it might never happen ;)

Thanks for the input guys, I will probably hold off for now and wait for the specs to be confirmed before purchasing.

I always seem to get the upgrade itch around Oct/Nov.

This. Don't worry about the future, as your upgrades will be cheaper by the time you know what you need.

Then again, if you are already missing out on some titles because of your rig, then by all means upgrade.

Ditto. Last year was the most expensive, ended up going for an entirely new system :D

Cannot afford that this year! And yeah I would wait too if I were you. Save that cash money, and get better bang for buck down the line.

If you're desperate for an upgrade to scratch the itch, get an SSD, if you don't already :p

Honest answer if you dont need to upgrade anything except for the GPU in my opinion. An i7 950 is fine for gaming even with the newest most demanding games on the market.

Pretty much this. Wouldn't be surprised if Maxwell the new nVidia family is out by the time we see GTA V on the PC.

If you have to buy something now (I know what that is like) then I'd get a decent CPU and hold off on the GPU purchase until nearer release. Spending money on a GPU now for a game that we have no idea when it is released isn't really a smart move, unless of course there are newer demanding titles coming out that you are interested in with a firm closer release date.

is there a release date for pc?

Weird that no one answered this. No there isn't. But don't worry too much. Most GTA games that come out as "console exclusives" come out on PC in about half a year to just over a year. So obviously, its a big wait, but itll definitely be worth it in the end.
If you dont need the upgrades for anything else, then id recommend you wait out until GTA V actually gets announced or comes out for PC>

There is some proof in some of the codes of the games that GTA V will come out on PC and PS4. But then again, it could just be made up to try and attract attention to the website!

If you have the money I'd recommend upgrading the CPU

why? there is no game current or unreleased that takes full advantage of a hyperthreading quadcore yet.

OP, sorry to sound harsh, but until the game is announced for pc, it is pointless speculation and anyone speccing you a thread is wasting yours and their own time.

I'd wait until it's out before upgrading anything if no other games that are out now require you to upgrade. Also as stated, you'd only really need to upgrade the GPU anyway. If you haven't got an SSD yet I'd say grab one of those now to satisfy the upgrade itch and wait until it's released before buying a new GPU.
