hi

i have been trying to overclock my prescott 550 (non J). With the cpu unlocked and the multiplier put back to 14 but i can only go up to 295 fsb, when i put it to 296fsb the system hangs then shuts down. The same happens when the cpu is locked, i can go to 245fsb but when i put it to 256fsb the system hangs then shuts down.

Can any one please give me some help/tips

my spec is not great but is as follows

CPU: 550 prescott
Motherboard: Asus p5wd2-E
CPU cooler: Coolmaster AQUAGATE Mini R80
RAM: Corsair CM2X512-5400C4
GPU: Ati x600
PSU: Qtek 400w

thanks
jamie

Could be your mobo is maxed out 296 fsb is not bad, but I see you use a Qtec psu, they are not known for there quality, a better psu may help you overclock some more.

Babyface UK

PS where did you get that chip from as P4's are not normaly multiplier unlocked.

ok thanks, i am looking at getting a nice beefie PSU (one that will be ok with xfire). With some of the high-er end motherboards now you can unlock the mutliplier on the CPU, so it's not just my chip

thanks

Theres are actually two Q-tecs (ones Q-Technology) so the PSU may be fine.

If it is one of the cheap gold kinds change before it blows up ;)

What temps are you getting?
what devider are you using on the memory(use 1:1)?
have you increased the northbridge voltage at all?
have you increased the cpu voltaage at all?

Although it most likely limited to ~300fsb which still isnt bad, just use stock multiplyer and clock it high as you can or drop the multi to 15x and try 275 fsb for 4.125ghz :D

I have the same mobo. It does 1.2Ghz FSB easily even with Corsair Value Select DDR2-533 Ram.

The mobo is rated for a 1.6Ghz FSB so either your PSU, CPU or both are holding you back.

Not the Ram as its good to go for a 1.3Ghz FSB.

400W PSU is probably not a good idea with the 5 Series CPUs as they are the worst Prescott of the lot for power consumption.

Try to get a stronger PSU.

yer it's one of the cheap ones

my temps now are system 26c and cpu is about 58
i am using a 3.4 didvider
i have the voltages on auto

thanks

Always get the best money can. A cheap one can fail and destroy your cpu+mobo+ram+hds. Rare but it does happen.

I use an Antec Phantom500 which is a totally silent 500W ATX2.0 PSU. Not cheap last year @ £127+P&P but very strong and silent as it only contains 1 x 60mm fan which is silent even on full RPM.
