Present for Dad

Hi all.

After some advice on what to buy my dad as a present. My budget is anywhere between £400-700.

I'm buying him (and my mum) one because I'm living at home for free at the minute while I'm looking for a house. I've been there longer than I'd hoped so want to buy something as a little thank you. I'm doing the same for my mum as well but that's sorted as I'll be getting her flights to Australia which I know she wants.

My dad is difficult though because he's one of those people who are very happy with their existence! I'm sure that's a great way to be, but it makes him difficult to buy presents for! The only thing I know he wants would be to do a cruise to the Arctic/Norwegian Fjords, but unfortunately that's out my budget. Doesn't want to go on holiday, wouldn't wear a watch/jewellery of any kind, has no 'gadgets' that he'd want. He wouldn't accept the money if I just gave it to him either. He's not the adventurous type either so I don't think one of those adventure days would be any good either.

Any suggestions?

Another tricky point is that I don't wan't to get anything that could be got cheaper. He's very stingy and doesn't understand why people buy expensive things. So for example, if I got him a nice bottle of whisky or a tv as suggested, he'd say "why didn't you just get a bottle from the supermarket or a 20" tv". Very odd I know!

Plane is a quite a good suggestion though. He likes boats more but that is definitely something I'll look into.

Prossie is a probably not a great idea though lol, and as for Amsterdam he's not interested in any foreign countries, apart from the Arctic (if that can be classed as a country!).

Yes I'm aware I'm painting a picture of a moody, grumpy, racist, boring old man!!

As for hobbies, not too sure. He likes rugby, reading and scuba diving. Don't know about anything you'd class as a proper hobby though. He's job is a fisherman and is also on the lifeboat so obviously has a fair interest in nautical things. Thought about some kind of sailing trip, but not to sure on that one.

And at Dane3388, it's not really that much money when you consider how much I'm saving. I've got literally no outgoings and I'm saving almost everything I earn so in actual fact I'm probably being tight! But if I bought something really good I'd never be able to move out!

Am I the only one thinking 'why don't you get him flights to Oz so he can join his wife on holiday'?

Haha, yes that might seem be a bit weird. My mum is going out with her mum to see my mum's brother brother. My dad doesn't really have any interest in going as he's already been twice.

Might have to do some investigation on the sailing. He wouldn't want to go on a typical sailing 'cruise' because he'd get bored, but maybe one of the ones where you get involved. Although I have a feeling he probably knows the basics, and anything advanced might be too much work (he's 57 so getting on a bit )

wouldn't finding somewhere else to live be a good gift?

Not down to me mate, waiting for the gf to get a job down here so we can get a place. I'd be out like a shot if I could! 23 and still living at home is not cool!

Buy him 700 quids worth of Uber shed & help him do the groundwork & then he can build his Man cave.

He's got a pretty cool study as it is. I think a man cave might be a bit of a downgrade. Probably pretty chilly in the winter, although I suppose he could build a man fire.

Like the sound of shark diving, I reckon that might be an idea, may be a bit over-budget though. I'll investigate.
