Pretty major Wi-Fi Problem

Hey guys, so basically I've currently got two computers a Macbook (2008) and a Custom built gaming machine.

Now, due to me still living at home and what not, the router is downstairs and my mum is against routing wires throughout the whole house to enable me to have access to Ethernet Internet. Why? I don't know, she always claims, 'It's her house and she doesn't want it looking amess', so that's that, so I have to use wi-fi! Which is 'okay'.

So here's the issue I'm having, on my Macbook the internet speeds are leaps and bounds ahead that of my Gaming machine.

Here are four tests I did on both machines, on three different servers using Speedtest and one using BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test.\

Mac Results Below:

server 1 - liverpool: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3070990628 59.23 / 12.53
server 2 - manchester: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3070998521 63.82 / 18.53
server 3 - preston: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3070997181 46.99 / 15.05

BTW Performance test:

Download Speed (Mbps): 68.54
Upload Speed (Mbps): 15.79
Ping Latency (ms): 31.13

As you can see from these images, I am getting excellent speeds on the Macbook, but this is a problem because I never really use the Macbook apart from when I'm coding/designing web work and it doesn't make use out of the fast speeds, etc, etc.

And here are my dreadful PC Speeds for comparison.

Server 1 - Liverpool: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3071008532 31.79 / 12.48
Server 2 - Manchester: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3071010957 29.78 / 18.73
Server 3 - Preston: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3071013068 29.60 / 16.96

BTW Performance test:

Download Speed (Mbps): 33.72
Upload Speed (Mbps): 16.83
Ping Latency(ms): 28.00

As you are able to see from these results, I am getting half-less than half of the speed that I'm getting on my Macbook, now this may not be a problem for most of you and some of you may think I'm being a bit picky, but the fact of the matter is, for the most part, I play a lot of games, I do a lot of downloading and streaming etc.

I want to get what I'm paying and not half of what I'm paying for, should I get a new Wi-Fi card or there another issue at hand here?

A few other important details that I may have missed out:

I am on BT Infinity 76/20 and my PC Wi-fi card is the ASUS PCE-N53 300Mbps 11n Dual band Wireless LAN PCI-E Card.

Does anyone know a solution or is the only option buy a new/better NIC?

Your mother is quite right about the wires - as well as looking unsightly and being a nuisance when cleaning (do you do any of that?) they are a trip hazard.

Have you tried (temporariliy) putting the MacBook where the PC is? It could be a reception problem.

I've looked into this mate, briefly and I'm a little confused as to how they work, hopefully someone can correct me here.

You plug these into the wall next to the Router or whatever, plug in an Ethernet cable from the router to the Powerline kit and then what, where would I go from there?

edit:

I think I figured it out, it seems to be pretty seemless.

1. router to powerline kit 1
2. powerline kit two to bedroom - use other ethernet cable
3. win

Getting a better usb wireless adapter will help boost your figures. My son's pc upstairs went from around 25-30mbs with a cheap usb adapter to nearly 60mbs with this adapter. Couldn't believe the difference.

YOUR BASKET
1 x TP-Link 300Mbps High-Gain Wireless-N USB Adapter (TL-WN822N) £17.99
Total : £23.96 (includes shipping : £4.98).

This looks pretty good for its price point to be honest and to think I paid 35 pound for my Asus one o_o.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm going to go ahead and get:

But, would someone be able to tell me why the Macbooks connection is fine and the PC's is not? They are both in the same place/location afterall.

You'll wonder why you didn't get them sooner once they're up and running.. :)

We've already had a friend route ethernet cables through our house and install ethernet sockets for us, so fortunately i've not had to purchase any powerline devices. I did however get to test some devolo ones out in my last place of employment, even got to bring them home and test to(worked just as good as our hard-wired lines).

Oh this is great news, well I've gone and purchased a set of these! Cannot wait to try them out on Monday or whatever.
