Preview of Core 2 QX9770 Extreme

Wonder if there was some kind of problem with the chips, early versions i know but that one hell of an increase in heat for a small clock increase.

Some dollop of paste he's used there though.

Jokester

Edit: Must be a dodgy chip, it's using 70W more than the QX6550 even though it's only 200MHz faster

Woah, that much paste is probably a thermal insulator. Im guessing that ES is very early silicon, the default Vcore is showing up over 1.33V. the QX9650 sample on Aandtech was showing 1.2V. 10% more voltage is going to give more heat. The overall increase in system power could also be partly due to the overclocked X38 motherboard as well.

What an absolute disgrace, Intel sends them a grands worth of CPU and they build it up like some one who's never seen a bare CPU, I let my wife see it and asked what she thought, she answered I thought the paste was to fill the microscopic defects, then said surely that amount would be an insulator.

My wife has never built a PC in all her life so if it's so obvious to her why on earth is it not obvious to the morons who did the test?

Maybe I should write to Intel asking for one for my wife to test I feel confident she would do a better job.

Doesn't matter how good the application of thermal paste is: that thing is chewing threw A LOT more power than the QX9650. A huge amount.

I think I'm going to start a new thread about Intel going under because their Phenom Launch-spoiler is... a Preshot in disguise! :o

Early sample no doubt, its running at 10% more voltage than the previously reviewed Q9650's, and the the overclocks that have been seen on early samples of the Q9650 have been approaching 4ghz on air. I doubt the final retail chips will be anything like this, as the Penryn is targetted to hit 4ghz 'stock' speeds before its replaced with Nehelem, or at least thats what the rumors say.

If you also look at the picture they haven't even cleaned it properly the blue writing is still on it, I rekon if it were given to 50% of the people on this forum the results would be better they just didn't care and it's obvious.

Probably the TIM was sponsored by AMD with instructions to use the whole tube.

That made me laugh :D
