Hi guys, i've read tons of places that the prices on NVidia cards are expected to go down soon... Does anyone a know an estimated date at which the prices will be cut? I'm eagerly awaiting it since i'm not loaded :P But getting very inpatient :P

Thanks,
Dan

I suspect this will coincide with the release of the 9800GTX+ next month. Word on the street is it will be priced at $229 with the 9800GTX dropping to $199. So over here one would expect the GTX price to match up against the 4850 (~£120) with the GTX+ around £20 higher.

Coming in at under £150, the GTX+ would be a very attractive proposition as it seems to beat the 8800ultra in most benches (ignoring very high res, but people playing up there will likely want a better card anyway).

Of course, there is a case to suggest that one would be better off pushing the boat out and spending £180 on a 4870 rather than £140 on a GTX+.

with all these good cards coming in at £120 - £180 you really would have to be barking to spend £500+ on a gtx280. Or maybe thats just being tight :D

Well, there's always a premium for the top cards and for people with the cash who love their gaming I don't see anything wrong with dropping £400 on a GTX280 or two.

Personally I've never had a top range gfx card, the most expensive I've ever had was a 6800GT at £211 (bear in mind I've been buying 3d cards for over 10 years right back to the Voodoo1). But if something came out costing £300-400 that generally was the business (i.e. twice as fast as cards in the £150-200 range) then I might be tempted.

I think for the first time, we have a situation where multi-card solutions (SLI/Xfire) are looking genuinely worthwhile compared to a single high end card. 2x4850 or 2x8800GTS cost around £250-280 and yet are often quicker than any single card solution. Of course, it depends a bit on what mobo/psu people have, but in the past SLI was rarely worth the hassle.

The only problem for me really is that I'm slightly disappointed by the performance of the new cards. I wanted something that would be a genuine leap forward from my GTS320 at a decent price. The 4870 is the best value card right now it seems but it is only around 50-60% quicker than the 8800GT (which in turn is marginally quicker than my card). I was hoping for something more than double the speed priced in the low£200s. 2x4850 would fit the bill but I don't have an xfire mobo.

:D

I'm sure the people who didn't upgrade since an nVidia 6800 series or perhaps a Radeon X19xx series will really notice a crazy jump!

Sometimes its nice to only upgrade graphics every two years for the full hit!

Of course, but some people ([uI]Iceman or Jokester, say) seem to have a truckload of cash to throw at hardware. The 8800Ultra was never really worth the extra over the GTX for example.

If I wanted to I could go out this afternoon and buy a new mobo, 3x GTX280 for tri sli and 30" screen to view it all on. But I've always looked for value in my purchases and I can't see the £2500 outlay being worth my while really for a bit of extra e-peen and the chance to finally play Crysis.

For sure, I used to only upgrade every two generations (Voodoo1 -> Voodoo 3 -> gf2mx -> gf4) but deep down I was kinda hoping for something spectacular (maybe unrealistic) over the bottom end 8800 cards.

The 4870 performs up to tha of the GTX280 in some games and even beats it, no point even touching the GTX280 when you can buy 2 4870's for the same price.

If the 9800GTX+ are coming in at £140 a pop i would end up getting 2 of those, as i would see more benifit in that than buying one 4870 and a new motherboard(if you want xfire at a later date) for the same cash.

All comes down to yir current situation

Thanks for the feedback guys, well, i'm looking at an 8800GTS but i don't plan on buying one yet if within a say... week? It'll be £20 cheaper...

Ps. Hamoodii
Fallout is my favourite game ever! :P

If you are looking at an 8800GTS you want to be getting the 4850 since it is faster than the 8800GTS.

I've still got a Voodoo 3 16mb (and the box) from last century. Cost £129.00 at the time. Massive upgrade from my 2 mb "S3 VirGE":)

In principle yes, but of course you need a xfire capable mobo to run 2 4870s, and a beefier PSU to boot. Then there's the fact that for people with phat chequebooks, you simply can't beat 2 or 3 GTX280s in SLI/Tri-SLI. Of course, once 4870x2 hits the streets this may change with quadfire thrown into the mix.

If I were building a new rig today I'd give strong consideration to a crossfire setup, but unfortunately for many people it's not that simple. 2*4850 seems to scale pretty well and isn't that much slower than 2*4870, despite saving over £100.

Yes but if some people like me was wanting to go SLi then we would need new mobo's due to the fact we only got one PCI-E slot and would possibly need a new PSU either way so the cheapest option would be ATi anyway whatever would happen. Yes there is always going to be the people who have more money than sense who would proberbly go with 3-4 GTX280s but then again if I was those people I'd get 3 or 4 GTX280's AND 3 or 4 4870's and a crossfire mobo :D.
