Price Cuts?

Up until now I've never really concerned myself about SLI/Xfire compatibility on a mobo, as I've always bought them based on price, overclocking potential, and other features. Historically SLI has always been a bit of a luxury with the added hassle of heat/power/compatibility issues (i.e. some games not scaling properly) but multi-GPU solutions finally seem to be worthy of consideration.

My current mobo (P5N-E SLI) is SLI capable but only at 8x, so I can't see myself going down that route just yet. I suspect it may be a consideration if I decide to upgrade mobo/cpu next year. Ideally I'd still like to see a very fast single card solution in the meantime though, maybe 4870x2 will provide that.

4870 is only about 10% slower than the GTX 280, and its also faster in some at high res with lots of AA, so considering the prices difference, its a no brainer, as one costs £199, while the other is £411 and upwards. :)

Well, there's always a premium for the top cards and for people with the cash who love their gaming I don't see anything wrong with dropping £400 on a GTX280 or two.

For a card like a 9700pro or 8800gtx then yes it's worth spending a premium but not on the GTX 200 series. With 55nm, and maybe GDDR5, it could well be a different story but that is a few months away.

:D

I'm sure the people who didn't upgrade since an nVidia 6800 series or perhaps a Radeon X19xx series will really notice a crazy jump!

Sometimes its nice to only upgrade graphics every two years for the full hit!

indeed, i will be going from a 780g onboard and a X2 @ 2.65ghz

to prolly a Q6600 and a 4870 (maybe a 4850 but i prefer the cooler on the 70 as well as the speed)

<actaully i did have a gaming card, a xxx 256mb 7800gtx but sold it 3 months back before it was totally worthless but even so my next card will be a huge jump >

Haha, well i'm currently running an X800XT so anything really is a jump. I'm waiting for either the 8800GT or the 8800GTS to lower in price. Since my budget on a card is £100, and if i can get an awesome card for lower than that then i will!

But i'm inclined to wait because i've set my heart on the BFG 8800 GTS :P But it's currently priced higher than the 4850! Which is a way better performer!

You sig is too big m8 you need to adjust the height to 75 pixels :)

9800 GTXs are already going for $199 (£100ish) in the U.S. I was looking as I go there on hols in 7 weeks. The GTX 260 cards are £220-230 at mo and the GTX 280 are £375, hopefully price will have dropped then aswell. Soooo tempting. :)

Im running an 8800GT and allthough id like to upgrade to to say ive had a 4850/70 i cant justify it at the moment, im not seeing any problems in games i play @ 1680x1050 so to spend money would be a little insane fo me personally.
Ive had my GT since launch day and expect to have the card for atleast another 6-8 months, a quad core will be the port of call when the time comes as thats what alan wake will need and that is the game im using for my upgrade needs.

If i was on the market for a new grfx setup id be lending serious thought to a 4870 and i never thought i would say this but maybe even xfire 4850's and i swore id never go multi GPU but the performance is undeniable, and with multi GPU rigs becoming so readily used as apposed to the way it used to be reserved for the extremely well off or just plane silly people, xfire/sli game support should flourish now and non support will become the minority and eventually Multigpu cards like the X2'S will become the standard offering.
