Price Fluctuations

Hi there

If estimates of the dollar rate dropping to around 1.30 it means things will only get more expensive.

This is not etailors fault, if you want someone to blame look at the government for putting the UK economy in such a state that has caused the pound to weaken so much against the dollar. As computer stuff is mostly purchased in dollars its causing all these prices increases. Look at prices 2-3 months ago on CPU, Motherboards, Graphics, PSU's etc. and you will see they have shot up.

Memory is not too bad as memory prices kept droppin so kinda balancing out the poor rate.

Then there is monitors, they have not changed too much due to the manufacturers generally not only updating their dollar rate quarterly however the prices we just paid on DELL monitors the pricing has gone up 20% and suspect the likes of Samsung, LG will also follow suite very soon as well.

Thanks for explaining that, Gibbo.

Thank god I grabbed the Dell S2409W when it was just £200 last week! It's annoying because I need to order a rig in about 2-3 weeks and everyweek I see prices increase. :(

Same here. I am doing some overtime to justify a new PC but every week it seems like my spec is less justifiable... Think I will end up treating myself to a new case and PSU and leaving the rest.

i just bought a few things from the states and WOW the price difference is crazy, we are so getting ripped off as usual over here thanks to the rates, one of the things i bought was a velociraptor 150g brand new from the states for $120 working out at about 70-80 £ at the current conversion rate and shipping was only 5 pounds so im buying from the states from now on.

Got a question for a member of the OcuK staff, just wondering but since the horrid situation of the currencies has overclockers buisness gotten better, worse or stayed the same ?

9 Months Later

Just thought I'd look at this - 9 months on.

A couple of the component specs have changed very slightly (Q6700 not Q6600; OEM optical, not retail; 9800GT not 8800GT).

Amazingly, the price is now only 16p different to the price I paid!! Although, the components are now 9 months older / more out of date.

Oh - and VAT has gone down by 2½% - so the component prices are still slightly higher...

Well, this thread scared the hell out of me. Fortunately after a bit I noticed the dates written beside the posts.

Still an interesting read, thanks for reviving it

I've been buying fairly regularly for the past few months and prices are going up and down all the time. I'm pretty sure the velociraptor I have in my basket has gone up since last week :(

Business usually get much better deals on FX rates than consumers do, therefore it is possible that our favourite supplies gets a rate much closer to the daily spot rate that their bank provides (around $/£ = 1.64).

Just be careful how you curse the pound, in actuality it's better for the pound when you can buy more dollars (ie when $/£ = 2.00) hence it is 'stronger' but it is weaker the closer the gap is (ie when it was around $/£ = 1.45 not too long ago).

However, the weaker the pound is, the stronger the dollar is, therefore if $/£ = 1.00 we would be getting our stuff at nearly the same expensive cost as in the USA.
