Price rises before joining, but after paying deposit

Hi all,

I've joined a golf club, therefore I've been on a waiting list for the last 6 months, waiting for my spot on the 23/24 season.
I paid the deposit 6 months ago and they gave me the current membership price, £980.

They've emailed everyone to say their prices have gone up for this season by 7.5%, which is about £75.
What are the legalities of them putting my price up after they have accepted a deposit (£250) for this 23/24 season already?

Am I entitled to ask for the original amount, since my deposit was taken before the price rise?

Cheers,
Mark

Probably a grey area without a written contract. From a social perspective entering into a dispute with a golf club you are only on the cusp of joining may ruffle a few of the notoriously sensitive feathers which abound in such places.

I recall a snobish friend of mine querying the bill with the manager of a posh restaurant receiving the reply, "Perhaps Sir might consider if we are right for him, or indeed if he is right for us. The bill stands Sir, kindly settle it".

I tried to make my chortle look like a cough, probably not very successfully.

I imagine they will likely say that you can continue to join, or have your deposit back if you don't like the new price.

If they offer you your deposit back, there is likely little you can do.

I'm not sure I'm getting the OP, what difference does it make that you've paid a deposit on the old membership price? Everyone else at the club will have done the same and are now subject to the price increase.

Would be a completely different story if you had said the price increase is only affecting new members, and your price was going up despite having paid part of the joining fee prior to this.

Complete non story tbh.

I got an email this week from my breakdown cover explaining a 13.4% price increase that i have to pay despite paying for the full annual premium in Dec-22. Apparently its in there T&C's

I'd say the deposit was a contract for a place on the waiting list only. I think they are within their rights to offer you the full membership at the rate as at today.
