Prices are rising and I need a new build - not sure which path to take.

I am not sure which upgrade route to take as the new Intel 1366 platform is ridiculously expensive (and fast) and I was also banking on the now old Intel 775 hardware coming down in price. The exact opposite has happened due to the exchange rate :( As you can see by my sig that my PC is getting really old now and as an obsessive gamer I really need to upgrade.

How much faster would a modest Intel 775 build be compared to my current setup - the only component I plan on keeping is the 8800GTS 512. I am looking for something to last me about a year as Intel 1366 hardware would have dropped in price. Some of the new components like the PSU, hard drive and the case I will be able to re-use. I am considering the cheaper dual core option as the quads are getting a bit too expensive with the increases.

Any ideas on what will serve me best for the next year gaming at 1680x1050 with perhaps one future graphics card upgrade. I also plan on overclocking but nothing too extreme as that can push up the price due to being too selective regarding components. I am also not interested in dual graphics.

This is what I will be purchasing - please fill the gaps:

motherboard - ????
CPU - overclockable - ????
motherboard - overclockable - ????
4GB PC2-6400C4 - overclockable - ????

Vista Home oem 64 - premium or basic ????

Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 PSU - £73.59 inc VAT
case - Antec 300 - £42.54 inc VAT
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB - £57.49 inc VAT
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 - £18.39 inc VAT

Depends on your budget, but:

Asus P5Q
OCZ memory
Your choice of CPU, based on budget: E5200<E7300<E8400=Q6600

PSU is more than you'd need for this system - not sure what you'd need for i7.
Case is good.
Samsung F1 is cheaper than WD and as well thought of.
Cooler is good VFM.

The PSU is more of a long term purchase. I am trying to spend as little as possible, but if I have to spend more to get the gaming performance for the next year, so be it. Is it worth spending less on a motherboard than the P5Q.

How much faster is a modest 775 rig than my current old socket 939 with tha same 8800GTS 512 graphics card? I am trying to spend less now so that I can go for the big one in a years time.
