Hi to all,
I appreciate that Zen 2 is not too far off (few months?) but if I were to buy a machine now, what would you be your thoughts on this as a possible build? Of course, I would advise anyone else to wait but it's sometimes a little different when it's concerning yourself and not another random person on the internet.
I like to use Adobe software; Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator being the main ones I currently use, though I do intend to use many others including After Effects - which I understand can require a lot of memory. Other software may come into play more frequently in the future, blender, 3ds Max, Maya, etc. I also game at 1440p on a G-Sync 144hz monitor.
As per usual, I like to buy something that kind of sits in the VFM for a high-end spec (nothing too cheap and cheerful, however). I don't require a completely new system, but certainly, the main part of it does need to be changed, e.g. CPU/mobo/ram, etc. So, I think I won't be needing to replace the storage, GPU, and maybe one or two other things. That said, I may pick up a huge capacity hard drive to put some older files on. Not sure. Also, the spacebar on my keyboard is showing its age so I may end up picking up a new one to compliment the build as well.
This is what I've got at the moment:
HAFX case
i5 6600k @ 4.2~4.4GHZ
Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3
16GB DDR4 dual/chan 2133mhz
Be Quiet! 650w
This is what I'm thinking about if I were to buy now:
CPU: I don't upgrade often at all (last full, proper upgrade was around 2012), so I need the focus to be on this component above all others. It's the one part of the build I'm quite happy to chuck a bit of extra money at. I really like the idea of going over to an all AMD system but I keep reading that the software I use likes core speeds above the numbers of cores? Now, I'm not quite sure what to do. Additionally, a very good cooling solution will, of course, be required. I don't see the point on skimping on that. The Noctua cooler on my current CPU has been excellent.
I don't know if the 2700X would suffice (correct me if I am wrong) so I was thinking maybe a Threadripper processor like the 2920X, 32GB memory, a decent, suitable motherboard (wouldn't mind a change from Gigabyte), and a modular PSU which qualifies for my needs (750w?). I don't think I need a new case but I would like one with higher build quality as I've never had a case that has cost much over £100.
Two possible specs which are completely open to change at this early stage:
AMD:
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Intel:

Now, of course, this is a relatively quick first system check so things could change a lot. I may not even need to buy a new CPU cooler if going with Intel since I think my Noctua may be compatible.
Any thoughts/constructive criticism welcomed.
