Decided to oc my q6600 to 3.8ghz earlier, 1.2750 vid chip, set vcore in bios @1.50625, cpu pll, 1.54, fsb term 1.24, nb1.14 llc enabled. Fsb-nb strap 333mhz, ram @2.02v 4-4-4-15. 845mhz. Failed prime95 after about 2 minutes.(bsod) Im wondering could this be due to a memory issue or simply would i have to up the vcore a bit more. Temps had started to hit 80-80-71-71 during priming, will be getting the cpu and cooler lapped this week to try and drop/even the temps. Tia for advice or input.

Hey setter,

80-80-71-71 is amateur night temps and I doubt you will get 65nm silicon to be happy running 3800MHz at burning hot temps! :p

Sounds like your at the Hot-Gates . . . at those uBer speeds your gonna need hefty volts but the extra juice is only gonna get the temps rising so your window of success will get smaller and smaller. Clear out the chickens from your machine and redo your cooling ;)

I'm pretty rubbish at reverse engineering someone elses overclock because I work from stock upwards starting with all volts really low then tweak as needed. vCore isn't the answer to all problems though strangely it does tend to nearly always help! :o

If you suspect the memory is flakey or needs more vDimm then a good old overnight DOS memtest generally clears things up!

Yep the temps were a bit scary:D. i have had the system stable at 3.6ghz without issue, cooling is a TRUE black with 2x2000 rpm fans, ive primed it before with temps of 58-58-52-52 @load. Was also quite warm in my room today and i have a feeling my 3 case fans (yate loon 1300rpm 2x intake 1 exhaust) may not be upto the job. When i first started clocking this rig i began with 3.0ghz on stock voltage, gradually moving to 3,2, 3.4 then 3.6. Im considering changing the case fans to silent eagle 2000's and lapping the cpu and cooler as both have pretty uneven surfaces. Will also try increasing the vdimm and slacken the timings.

you need more NB and probably a little more FSB Term try 1.3NB / 1.34 FSB Term, lower if stable

Also no harm in raising the PLL to 1.6v

I'd recommend loosening the timings on your RAM whilst you overclock your CPU, so as you're only dealing with one issue at a time, get your CPU stable, then you can go back and re-tighten your memory. Its possible what you're describing could be a RAM issue

Agreed on more volts for th NB. 1.14v is pretty low. Although @ 80c your on the toasty side. More vcore probably wont do much apart from drive those temps up. Could try re-arranging you fans and lapping as you suggested but i dunno how much more your gonna be able to shave off those temps.

Wow, that's hot!

Funnily enough, I was doing exactly the same thing yesterday, same mobo, same chip, trying it out at 3800. But my temps at that speed were around 62-63 average. But I was only shoving 1.4V through it!

As said, 1.14V for the NB is too low, well for me it would be. I'm currently using 1.28V with this mobo.

Cheers for the advice and tips guy's, ill give it another attempt sometime this week. The rig will be out of use for a few days as im getting the cpu and TRUE lapped, and installing 2x74gb raptors in raid0. Ive also ordered another three sharkoon silent eagle 2000 fans for the case, as i think the yate loons arent really upto the job. The 2 intake fans are covered with dust filters which i may also remove as i regularly clean the case with compressed air anyway. Hopefully this will help to shave a bit off the temps.:)
