PRINCE2 certification: anyone done it?

I've done it courtesy of my company and it is a difficult course to pass, as if you're not experienced in the arena already it's difficult to pick up which bits to focus on.

I did a 5 day course and it was quite intensive but passed at the end of it. I would find it difficult to self-study and pass, I imagine.

I would say forget about the course for now, get the experience and worry about it later.

I found it relatively simple, though for me it was just a case of primarily different names for the same things i use day to day.

Your find that real world experience for PM is usually better, but yes i know sometimes you need that bit of paper to get infront of someone

I am also looking for a PRINCE2 certification as it is a mandate given by my organization. One of my friends has done his certification from PROJstudy, which has the lowest prices in the market. The 5 day course costs around 600 GBP. I am seriously considering going for it? Have any of you guys heard about it??

Did PRINCE2 foundation and found it comparatively easy (top marks in the class, biadge!).

I would agree it would be useful as a peripheral qualification, but not a requirement. Good project managers are normally reference-based from my experience (i.e. promoted internally because they're good, or get fun contracts because they have great portfolios).

I think a lot of it is common sense, if you work in the area already.

Hadn't heard of the APM one until it was mentioned here. I've sent my application off and had it approved from PMI to do my PMP exam, so need to book that in at some point in the next few months.

No one done the PMP instead of the PRINCE2?

The NHS loved Prince2. Where I used to work any old idiot got employed as a PM if they had Prince2 on their CV. It was actually quite embarresing as the calibre of people they had running projects was dire.

I've not seen much about other PM courses so would be interested to know what options there are for non Public Sector jobs, as I would like an IT focused PM qualification, but now I'm out of the Public Sector I don't ever plan to go back :)

It certainly used to be a stipulation that the governmental departments must have prince2 compliance for all projects. I don't know if they have got lax with that now, however.

Personally, I hate Prince2. It's so overly abused by most people that the chances of someone who flaunts their qualification thereof are going to be rubbish PMs. I'm sure your girlfriend is different, though :p :)

PRINCE2 Certification

Well guys, I am in the private sector and I feel that PRINCE2 certification does make your job easy. It actually depends upon the individual, whether he just wants the certification or wants to go deep inside the framework.

PRINCE2 course

It might be a case with some organizations, but if you are looking for a better job then a PRINCE2 certification is a must. It adds to your resume and is often the entry criteria for many companies.

I would beg to differ

I have never seen Prince 2 being an entry criteria for a PM job (well outside of public sector) and if Prince 2 is mentioned is usually an indication that the company hiring has public sector clients / contracts which would like to see it

I work for a company with several hundred PMs and I could probably count, on one hand, how many have Prince 2 and that is purely for public sector clients

This rings true from what I saw when searching for private sector jobs earlier in the year, Prince2 was only a desirable, never an essential.

trying to get my work to pay for this at the moment (public sector). Theres been a sudden surge to make sure every project we do is well planned and documented and feel this would really help.

at present theres been a bit of negativity around it , but il crack my boss eventually and its pretty cheap compared to what we spend on other cack.

Got my practitioner a couple years back, only problem I had was the difference in terminology between the company I had worked for for 4 years previously with their own vs what was in the course!

PRINCE2

I have currently completed PRINCE2 from PROJstudy and I found their methodology really good. It did stretch for 5 days but in the end it was very fulfilling and I really learned a lot about PRINCE2 methodology. PRINCE2 Practitioner exam can be really unnerving but the trainer really made the concepts easier to understand. I would be waiting for the results but I think its really worth a try!!
