Hi,

I've just ordered a CD with learning materials for PRINCE2 foundation and practitioner certifications (as I learn better on my own) and was just wondering if it's possible to just sit the exams when ready without paying a lot for the whole course?

I remember doing my ITIL stuff and I just learned the stuff at home in my own time then sat the exam, but the PRINCE2 seems a bit different.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

yes you can but I wouldnt advise it. Of the 5 people I know who have self studied have all failed the exam. However, dont let that stop you, they may have been dummies :D

I self studied ITIL but would never have passed Prince without the 5 day course.

I know that you can do the foundation course on your own. The website only mentions taught courses for the practitioner.

Thanks, found the foundation course for £200 and practitioner for £370.

I'm a bit concerned by spoonz's experiences. The foundation is multiple choice so a good understanding should be sufficient to pass shouldn't it? I could understand though if they failed the practitioner as that involves a few essays which the course may prepare you for.

Either way I think I'll do the foundation then decide on the practitioner or wait for an employer to pay for the course (if I ever find one!)

practitioner is a 5 day course and it really needs 2 hours a night "homework" and some pre-reading. They basically tell you exactly what you need to know to pass, I would recomend doing the foundation and then pay for the foundation -> pracitioner course and exam which is two days.

Work put a group of us through the foundation and practitioner exams. I passed both without doing the 5 day course, it was only a day or 2 of revision, too.

What we did have however was someone who told us how to make sense of that horrible Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 book. The book on its own is a horrible horrible mess to read, without that guidance it would have been far harder.

The practitioner exam is much more about how the processes work together, rather than the "What are the outputs of Initiating a Project?" style questions which seemed to make up the foundation. I found it easier than the foundation because of this.

Remember also that the practitioner exam is open book, and you're allowed to make notes in the book too (on the book itself, not loose leaf inside it.) it's good to bookmark the processes, components and apendixes too, as you will find yourself flipping through them in the exam, if only to remember what goes into which output etc.

I could start the debate of the value of PRINCE2 in real life vs the value of PRINCE2 on your CV but I think I'll leave it..... :D

Conversly my colleague took the foundation and practitioner with just self study and passed both :)
