Is it possible to do a print screen in OSX or a screen dump that can be pasted into a graphics program?

Cheers

cmd + shift + 3

Will create a screenshot (JPEG) and dump it on the desktop

..Here you could either paste that in to an image editor such as Photoshop, or you could simply insert that JPEG if you wish :)

And Option + Cmd + 4 to highlight the area you want first.

Works great on icons... drops them into Photoshop with a transparent background. :)

I don't think it's a JPEG though. I'm sure Panther was PDF and Tiger (not sure if it was from the start or after a patch) uses PNG.

Open up the finder go Applications -> Utilities -> Grab. Grab is a screenshot tool that can be used to take the whole screen, the whole screen after x seconds, individual windows (thus saving you cropping) and wahtever you select with a box. It outputs to .tiff which is easily converted to a more sensible format like .png. It's what I used to take all the Mac screenshots for the OcUK OS X Folding@Home installation guide.
