(one that is NOT 192.* or 172.* or 10.*)

Not wishing to be pedantic, but the private addresses are 192.168.0.0/16 (192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255), 172.16.0.0/12 (172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255) & 10.0.0.0/8 (10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255).

172.1.2.3 (for example) is an internet address, not private.

WELL YOU HAVBE BEEN!

;)

Thanks for clarifying. I admit I made an error there

and what you said is not strictly tru,

if certain points or forwarded,

or if the print server was in a DMZ zone then it could be printed in affect

speak for yourself,

ud be suprised *** people have at home,

4 dsl connections vlans dmz's etc

Is that what YOU have? 4 DSL connections and a DMZ? I take it thats because you host websites from home? you use a VLAN? I can't see what a home user would need one for, unless you wanted to connect up all your family / friends in different houses to one network... but why not just use a VPN instead?!

The average user will NOT have a DMZ or 4 DSL connections. You're being pedantic now.

That's not quite right anyway, 172.17.x.x is also private :p

Where did I say that 172.17.x.x wasn't private? I said that 172.16.0.0/12 was private and that range includes 172.17.x.x

Edit - You may want to read RFC1918 (ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc1918.txt) and learn about subnetting.
