Printer Network Problem

We have installed two new computers running Windows Vista Premium on to a small network with other computers being run on Win Xp Pro - all 32 bit.

The computers are linked to a netgear switch, and the HP m1005 mfp printer is linked via USB to the new Vista computer. The other computer that runs Vista can pick up the printer and are running on the network fine.

However, one computer that I need to have access to the printer is running on 32 bit Xp Pro and can't see the printer when I try and add it. I've attempted to install the driver but it needs to detect the hardware to progress with installation and it's not picking it up.

I've allowed sharing and no password needed on the printer preferences on the vista pc the printer is connected to and am not sure what's wrong.

Any help is welcome. Thanks

You need to install the XP driver on the Vista box so the XP box can download it. Go into the Printer properties, Sharing tab and click the Additional Drivers button.

You might need to download the plain vanilla driver from HP's website rather than the CD.

Okay, I need to reword my first post due to some new findings. Here goes again...

I have 7-10 computers on a network linked to a Netgear switch which is linked to a netgear router for internet access.

We have two new compaq computers which run Vista Home Premium.

These have replaced two computers which ran XP PRO. All other computers are WIN XP PRO 32bit - all software in network is 32 bit.

The printer is a HP LaserJet M1005 MFP printer linked to 'ADMIN1' which is one of the Vista PC's. It's connected via USB. The computer has had the whole driver package downloaded and installed - printing works perfectly well on this computer.

Now this is one part of which has changed since my first post. The other Vista computer has has the driver installed and works on the netowrk very fine. Now, when I add the printer it can't detect the HP laser jet printer on automatic detection, but it can see two other printers which are linked to other pc's. But I'm not interested in those. To add the printer I either have to 'connect' to it in one of the Vista networking&sharing windows or browse for it select 'ADMIN1' and then select the printer icon.....Now for some reason it then asks for a username and password and I enter those and select 'remember' the computer looses the ability to print when the pc has been rebooted, and then have to repeat the above steps.

Now, the other Xp pro problem remains in which I can't see or link to the laserjet printer. Now I've attempted to install 'additional driver' and I get options for x64 and Itanium - both I don't think fit my needs. The other option is x86 and that' sort of greyed out and it says it's installed.

As I mentioned before I have printer sharing on that doesn't require password, and I'm just pulling my hair outfiguring out what's wrong.

I thought Vista was meant to be better and easier than XP...proving not to be...

Anyhelp is welcome and thank you.
