Printer problems from within Windows XP

Got a slight problem on one of my work systems - plug the printer in via usb and nothing happens. Go into Start/Printers and Faxes/Add Printer and I get a message saying "print spool not found" or something similar - I'm not at that machine at the mo!

I haven't come across this problem before - anyone know a solution?

Start > Run > services.msc

Start the Print Spooler service.

However, there was probably a reason why it stopped in the first place, so have a browse through the event log to see what's up.
