Hey all

i'm looking to get a fair amount of photocopying done but realised I should probably buy myself a printer for uni anyway

i've looked at a Canon PIXMA MP510 and a Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart C4180

I've never used an all in one printer / scanner before. Is it possible, with this these printers (if any) to just scan a page in and have it automatically print out without having to load anything onto the computer.

thanks in advance

Quite interested in this thread myself. Always see scanner/printers in various high-street shops and supermarkets for next to nothing and wonder if they are any good

Ive got the Canon Pixma MP520 and yes it can do copies without the comp needing to be on. It acts like a photocopier and prints out your scan and you can choose b+w or colour. Its a good all round printer, the ability to have different paper loaded in both the bottom tray and the back tray is a good feature.

Make sure you factor in the cost of ink.

There are alternatives to the proper stuff like substitutes or refilling your cartridges but most of the cheap printers make their money back on the ink. I believe it is now mandatory to state on the box whether it contains a full cartridge or not. They got pulled up on it after trying to rob people blind for ages.

All they usually state on the box is that there are cartridges included, not how full they are. Which is truly a scam, of course.

And as far as I know, using refilled cartridges can void your warranty so be careful about that.

Not sure who it was, maybe Epson or Canon but i saw a printer the other day mention it had testing cartridges or something and would be ok for the first few prints but new cartridges would be required
