Hi guys.

I am using a fairly old Brother HL-1230 Laser Printer on my XP PC. It works fine on this PC and it will print documents from Word 2010 without issues.

However, when I try to print documents off my Windows 7 PC from Microsoft Word, when it prints out, all of the text will be in question marks.

If I print from Wordpad or Notepad on the Windows 7 PC, it'll be fine and will print perfect. It seems that Microsoft Word is the issue?

Could it be a driver problem, as when I searched for the printer from the Windows 7 PC, it auto installed the driver, and it'll be an XP driver it installed as it was on an XP computer.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

What version of Word is it? If it is a new on it might not like .docx format. Try saying it as an older version of .doc?

2010.

Windows 7 PC has 2010 and the Windows XP PC has 2010 so their shouldn't really be a compatability issue?

As I say if I print from the XP PC it's fine.

Sorry skipped that part of the OP. Have you tried it though or just assuming it won't work? I've seen these things do odd stuff

I tried that mate and it's still the same issue. I've found it it also does it when I'm trying to print out e-mails, so it's not just MS Word.

Maybe it's just because the printer doesn't support Windows 7?

Cheers

Is there a vista driver you could install on the 7 PC?

There is, but how would I install it? They don't download as EXE's, they download as system files.

I know how to usually install these, but the shared printer doesn't show up on device manager so I can't search for drivers for it.

Two ways I can think of, one would be to delete the printer from the Win7 PC. Then use the add new printer wizard to install the printer drivers, just tell windows the printer is on LPT1. Next delete the printer you've just created, then reconnect to the shared printer (if you want to be belt and braces unshare it and reshare under a new name). With a bit of luck it should use the new driver.

Another way, is if the win7/vista drivers are also for XP64. Go to the additional drivers tab on the WinXP machine, and add the drivers. The delete the printer from the Win7 PC and reconnect to it.

I'm not 100% sure on these methods because to be honest I haven't really used windows 7.
