Printing color issue

Hi,

I did a quick DVD cover for a friend back in 2011 and they've just asked me to print another for them. Not a problem as I kept the file.

Loaded it in photoshop and printed and the colors don't match, much more orange/yellow than the screen. Printer is the same printer as back then and it's the same photoshop file.

I've printed using printer settings and photoshop settings. My wife commented at Christmas her prints were coming out too warm and i just thought it was her and piccasa messing it up.

Printer is a Canon iP5200 and it's been a great printer until 3/4 months ago.

Any ideas what I should be checking? Digital image looks the same across many devices and my one screen is calibrated.

They look more orange than they are due to the white balance but you can see there is a difference. :(

Not sure what else you may have already tried so as to narrow it down. Evidently looks like the printer is the issue. Trying print pictures via other software other than Photoshop to see if the problem persists.

Nevertheless, the printer should have diagnostic/maintenance options in Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers. Right click the printer and select Printing Preferences.

I've not really tried anything yet, printers/photocopiers and me don't really get on ;)

I'll try some printer maintenance in the morning, check again and report back! :D

Another thing to check is whether Photoshop is taking care of your colour profile or your printer. If they're both having a go then you can end up with this shift.

Tried cleaning it all, printing at different quality levels as well as different paper. Still having issues. Next is profiles which may be the issue as the test page the printer did was fine..

Have you ran a nozzle check?

If you've ran a nozzle check and it looks good: Ensure that there's no colour management taking place in the printer settings, this option might be switched to auto adjustment, set it to off or manual.

Is your monitor calibrated?

What software are you printing from?

Yep nozzle check was fine.

Calibrated monitor, I've also check the images on phones, laptops and my other 2 pc's. Looks the same on them all.

Software: Windows own print feature, photoshop (the examples above), lightroom and even the wife on her laptop from Picassa has the same result.

Going to check color management next, if that doesn't work I am going to replace all the ink cartridges to check that.

What did you calibrate it with?

I've been looking at this issue over the last week. tbh, i can be **** with my own printing yet so an online service. However, i get similar issues sometimes.

So I was thinking of buying the Datacolor Spyder as an investment. DS colour labs provide sRGB colour profile matching, so as long as you use their specs and the monitor is calibrated correctly, then it should be like for like. Sounds like I'm plugging them a bit but you can sent them a test picture so they can verify.

This is very useful.

Even if you do your home printing, the Spyder might be worth a go.

Is it the same paper you are printing on ? I have found the colours vary depending on the photo paper, strangely I get the most accurate results on my Canon printer using Epson photo paper.

The image above was Canon paper, tried it on cheap brand paper too and even on standard printer A4 paper, all have color issues.

I've not had time to sit an work at this yet, hoping this weekend as I am off from Thursday to Tuesday.

It's the spider I've got, older model maybe about 6 years old now but has always worked well. I'd also think if it was the screen profile that was out it would look odd on other screens too.

Tbh, printing is mainly personal and family. 99% of pro printing is DSCL anyway, the only reason I did it this time was because I was doing it as a favour and getting £10 for it, printing and postage was coming in at £6. Spent more than that on ink and paper now trying different things :p lol

Make sure you choose Photoshop manage colours. Try ARGB in the View Profiles. Choose correct paper in the printer part under PS manage colors. Choose Premium Paper Semi Gloss in the Print settings & color management OFF..If it still prints over saturated, then go to Vibrance and turn it down the Vibrance a touch..
