Hi all,

I have a few questions for my own privacy on accessing wireless networks. I have a laptop with built in wireless, which I would like to use to access various (mostly public) wireless networks. I have just been reading about spoofing my MAC address to provide some privacy, but I think this just changes the software side, not the actual MAC address? Is this sufficient for my privacy? Are there other measures I can take to maintain my privacy?

Thanks in advance

I fail to see how this will maintain your privacy at all?

Put simply you have no privacy on an open network unless you are going via a VPN. All your traffic is broadcast in plain text for anyone to intercept. Plenty of websites use plain text passwords as do nearly all pop3/imap email systems. Cookies often uniquely identify you too, these can also be easily captured.

Basically what i'm saying is that if you care for your privacy then simply do not use open networks.

whatever your doing to your mac is useless. When you log into webpages use ssl (https) otherwise soemone can sniff your password. Anything you do on wireless can be seen unless its encrypted to your end connection. Make sure you have your firewall on.

I can sit on same wireless as you and see what pages you are viewing with some programs.
