I posted this in GD a couple of days ago with no success and it was suggested I posted in here, so sorry if it's in the wrong section.

Is there a law that governs what must be included in privacy policies of websites? I can only find templates for a privacy policy and the fact the website must conform to the various data protection acts and such but nothing said about what MUST be included in the policy. I ask because I've read that Google seems to be in trouble constantly about theirs being "too vague". However other sites look much worse to me, is this just because Google are a large company or am I missing something?

Thanks.

I don't think there's any written "law" about a privacy policy.

The only law I know about, other than the standard ones such as sex, race, etc, is if you're selling something it must now be disability friendly.

You have answered your own question really, the privacy policy covers any laws that are applicable in that country, generally what you cover in the UK should be sufficient for all users unless it is a product with sensitive information with it.

For example a website selling items will talk about how the users payment details, addresses, names, etc are safe, how they can opt out of mailing lists, the site security and data collection, etc.

As for Google they collect way too much information on every user they have, hence they are under a lot of scrutiny.
