Private Blog Server?

Hi all,

I'm looking for some Linux software that will allow me to run a private Blog on my server. I'm after decent functionality with search etc. I want to use this to document problems/fixes, studies and so forth.

Has anyone set up something similar and are there any software recommendations?

Linux distro of xampp would be easiest, you can install it and it comes with mysql, phpmyadmin, apache ect.

If you're looking for a Linux distribution to run your server I recommend that you configure Ubuntu 12.04 by following this guide.

If on the other hand, you have the foundations built and are searching for a blog or content management system, I suggest that you take a look at Drupal. Drupal differs substantially from other systems such as WordPress and Joomla, due to the way in which content is managed. It allows for much more manipulation and also includes very powerful taxonomy functions, though it can be quite tricky to set up.

I use a windows install of xampp myself, but have used turnkey lamp and wordpress VM's as well.

Drupal isn't the easiest. Might be overkill if it is just a blog you are after. I would be looking at Wordpress.

If it's private, then maybe you're after something more like http://evernote.com/.

Otherwise I'd advise a WordPress install which is protected by a username/password and maybe also limited to certain IP addresses.
