I move back to England in September and i fancy doing my PPL, i have been on a few websites for costings and ill be able to afford 3-4 lessons a month, will this be enough or would it be best to get a small loan and maybe get 4 hours a week until i pass.

Upon passing it obvious i will want to belong to a syndicate of owning my own plane, but what is the true cost of doing this, i have seen some with a 7k layout then £75 a month, is this the most cost effective way of flying or is it best to join a club and use there planes?

any links to good websites and forums will also be appreciated

is there any costs also that i will need to take account of thats not advertised?

Also does anyone fly from Durham Tees Valley as thats where i will be doing my PPL.

All I can offer you is that it is best to do as many flying lessons as you can per week and per month - so if you can fit in 2 2hour lessons a week do it!! You remember a lot more and slide right back in to things rather than going over what you did last week for the first part of the lesson (if that makes sense :) ) this works out cheaper in the long run as you are not covering ground you have already learnt then!
Join a club and get to know people - most 'owners' are very friendly and are just happy to talk flying! ;)

Not sure on the syndicate thing -guess i'd only do it if I really knew the people.
Im just started to get my PPL but over here in the states -
My dad owns his own plane over there in England :) a 4seater Jabiru!

Good Luck

My gf’s dad is a flying instructor there. Who are you learning with?

Edit: Huge spelling mistake :(

Glad you've chosen to get your PPL, its great fun training, as well as flying afterwards.

The key to it is currency. You need to fly as often as you can to get the maximum benefit from the lessons. If you can only afford one lesson a month I would suggest saving money and then do it all at once. In my opinion you want to be flying at least once a week whilst training.

A good forum is you don't know it is Pprune There is a private flying section which has a lot of information about PPLs, use the search function and you'll find a wealth of knowledge.

As to costs that all depends on what is included in your clubs prices. Generally you will have to pay for landing fees each flight, which will depend on the airport you fly from. Usually around £10 a landing. You will also need to pay for your medical, which is around £100. The exams should be free of change from your school but some schools have been known to charge for ground tuition. You will also have to pay for your flight test at the end of the course, around £160 (just for the examiner, you will also need to pay for the aircraft obviously)

I wouldn't start worrying around what to do after your PPL just yet, at least the details of it anyway. To start with after your PPL I'd just stay with your school and rent the same aircraft that you are used too whilst you build your confidence. But getting into a group aircraft is generally cheaper then renting so that maybe the way forward once you are done

Any more questions feel free to ask.

Cheers Blinkz.

this is the school i will go to first http://www.stgeorgeflighttraining.co.uk

The hourly rate seems quite good as well, like i say, i can do about 3-4 lessons a month, how did you go about it? how many lessons did you have a week and how much did it cost you?

A break down of costs would be great.

The school looks ok from the website. best bet is to look around all the local schools and see how friendly they, also have a look at the aircraft and see if they look in good nick etc. Its up to yourself which aircraft you do it in. From that website they have a tomahawk and a warrior, both are good aircraft so the cheapest is probably the best bet, which will be the tomahawk. Its also a slightly more twitchy aircraft so will make you a better pilot :)

I did my PPL in Edinburgh, and was doing it full time as I was working towards my commercial training. All in all it cost me around £5000 I think. The break down is what I said before, aircraft rental, landing fees, medical fee and final test fee. of which prices will all vary depending on the club, airport etc. How long it will take you is impossible to answer. It all depends on your natural talent as a pilot, the weather, the instructor etc. Most people take around 50-55 hours to pass the course.

Sorry to hear that, I'd suggest a PPL(A) but am pretty sure that would be even more boring hehe. Easier to visit places in a plane tho.
