Just had a new plate put on my car and I've just realised the only people I've told are the DVLA. Does this mean if I drive past an ANPR system/Plod my car would show up as uninsured because my insurance company has my old number plate down?

Didn't even consider I'd have to phone them?

Yes, you need to phone them, and they will reissue a insurance certificate with the new plate.

Just logged into their website (Swiftcover) and I was able to change the Reg number in seconds, didn't cost a penny.

Must say I like the way they do business, I can print out a copy of my insurance note anytime on their website, they sent me a text with their number as a contact so I don't lose it and text/email me with reminders such as proof of NCB needed.

When I go to sell the car, will I be able to put the old plate back onto it or will I be issued with a new one and the old plate be lost forever?

I got pulled over for my Z4 not being insured. They understood that I simply forgot to notify elephant that I'd put my private plate on. I couldn't remember my original numberplate otherwise they said I would have just got let off. I had a producer then had to pay £14 to change my number plate with elephant, then a further £8 next day delivery as they couldn't gurantee I would recieve the insurance note in time for my producer deadline (7 days)

They will usually re-issue the same plate to the car when you remove your personal plate.

Thought so, I'll keep hold of the old set of plates then. Also when I do go to sell how long before I want to sell it should I get the plates changed over? I don't really want to have to put the plate onto retention for a matter of a few weeks but also don't want to sell the car with the plate on it, or have my new car and old car for a few weeks while I change it over?

It takes a few weeks because you have to send your V5 off and wait for the new one to come through. Personally I'd want to give it at least 4 weeks - unless you're buying from a dealer who can sort it all out for you.

Same here, really happy with swift at the moment :)

Big facepalm here - of course you need to tell your insurer! You are insured to drive a car with registration AB51 ABC - and thats it. Change the reg and you are NOT INSURED until such time as you arrange cover for a car with registration number M11PET.

Simply didn't dawn on me, considering it's my first ever private plate and I've only ever sold 1 car before in 4 years it's not hard to forget and simply overlook the fact.

Anyways managed to change it all online so everything is fine, calm down the world isn't going to end :p
