Hey,

Can anyone tell me the simplest way of sorting out the following query?

I'm looking at buying a car private, the said car has a private plate on it which hasn't been removed, the seller has instructed his go to person to transfer the plate once the car has found a buyer. I want to view the car and drive away if I'm happy with it, but what does one do with the plate still being on it? Would all the paperwork come back to me ( plate retention ) and then I would have to forward it back to him? Trying to work out the easiest way of sorting this for both parties. Their probably is a real easy way that I'm not seeing. Pain in the ass with having the plate on the car still on it, is that it costs me money for a update on the insurance documents when the plate gets moved to either it's original or my own PP.

Cheers

Complete the V317 with you has the registered keeper and him as the grantee. Logbook is filled out as normal and send them both off. Once the plate is on retention you will be sent the new logbook together with a new mot certificate, he will be sent the plate retention. Job done!

the seller has instructed his go to person to transfer the plate once the car has found a buyer.

The seller is a massive nuisance then. He should transfer his plate off the car BEFORE he sells it, not after, otherwise it just introduces a pile of hassle for the buyer. Once you buy the car, hand over the money and drive it away then technically the plate is 'yours' as it belongs to the car at that point.

Presumably what he'll do is fill out the transfer documents, send them off, then a few weeks later have to notify you its come through and can have the reg changed.
