Private Plate Query?

So we currently have my private plate on our Honda and i plan to buy another private plate for my wife to assign onto the Honda and put my private plate on retention (Plan to buy 2nd car later). Can i assign the new private plate directly onto the Honda and DVLA will re-assign my current private plate back to me or would i have to put my current plate on retention and then put the new plate on?

You have to take a private plate off the car before putting a different private plate on to the car. Otherwise the first plate is lost in the DVLA void

So, remove private plate, wait for V5 with original plate on it. Then use this V5 to assign your 2nd private plate on to the car.

Recently I did similar - transfer private plate from one car to another. Actually was 2 steps, firstly remove the private plate from car A and get the retainer/re-assign form thing. Then assign the reg to car B. And for you I suppose also, assign the second new reg to car A.

the real ****er of it is technically some steps take a few days, and you're not allowed to leave the cars on the wrong plates or plateless, and should inform your insurance for every change. I decided F that, and just didn't drive around for the week or so I was selling my car and swapping plates around. Then phoned my insurance and removed one car, change 2 registrations, for a single admin fee.
