I have had a private plate on my car for some time and now i want to sell the car and take my plate off. I want to put the plate onto retention rather than another car.

I understand that i may not get the origional cars plate back but will get one of the same age letter.

My question is how long will it be untill i have my documents returned? I need to have the correct reg mot etc to sell the car!

Thanks for any help!

i have done this many times, when you fill the form in for retention write the original number in pencil at the top. i have just put a number on retention and i posted the form/ document/mot +cheque to my local dvla (notts) . 12 days later got a new disc and mot back, along with a letter for the no/plates. 7 days later got the retention certificate and the new document.so all in all 19 days start to finish. although they do state up to six weeks.

in the last 20 or so times i have changed plates or put on retention i have always received the old number back. i was lead to beleive by dvlc it would be a very rare case not to , as they are trying to combat car crime.
