Quick question here. if I have a private plate on my car what happens when I come to sell it? I know I would have to transfer the registration onto a retention(?) Paperwork. Does the car then have it's old registration back so I can sell it?

No you can crayon one on it.

You reckon that would be a joke however I know a (dumb) girl who bought her bf a personised number plate for his birthday by just going to the motor factors and asking for what she wanted on the plate. She thought the tenner was all you needed to pay for a private plate.

The plate belongs to the car. Sell the car with the plate on and the plate goes with it.

Therefore, you should transfer it off the vehicle onto another vehicle or onto retention BEFORE you sell it.

You never really own a personalised plate, you buy the rights to use it. Bare in mind:
1) If you sell the car with the reg then you loose the rights to it
2) It costs money everytime you transfer your registration or place it on retention
3) if you place your plate on retention or transfer it the replacement V5s take 2-3 weeks to arrive. If you plan on selling the vehice currenty assigned to the plate bare this in mind

Everytime I have moved my plate the car has been assigned its old DVLA issued registration however this is not a guarantee!

I have always wondered this. Say for example you put a new private plate on your car does your old plate remain in limbo on your old car or is it up for grabs to the general public?

It wouldn't be assigned to new cars and wouldn't be available to buy as a private registration. I understand there are some circumstances where they would issue a different one but can't remember what they are

Thanks for the help guys. THis is what I thought would happen. ITs best to transfer the plate before you sell then.

Definitely. When I bought by last car the previous owner didn't and I just agreed to sign it over to him (at his expense) - although after I bought the car I could have just kept it! I preferred having the correct reg than his initials though

It's not best, its imperative. Doing it after the sale:

a) Is a complete pain for the buyer
b) Leaves you totally at mercy to the buyer. If he decides he wants it, or doesnt want to help you, once you've sold the car to him thats that, there is nothing you can do!
