Hi guys,
Just so I'm perfectly clear I can ONLY purchase a private plate AFTER the date of registration of the vehicle?

So if the car is an M reg (1995)it can be a T or 51 reg?

If it is an S reg it cannot be before 1999? So no R regs etc?

I'm getting info from here:

http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/help/questions-before-a-purchase.html

Different to how I remember as I thought you couldn't have a newer reg but now apparently if is the opposite...

mis reading it. you cannot have a reg that is newer than the car you are putting it on

Depending on the age of your vehicle, there may be restrictions to what registrations would be suitable for use on your vehicle. This is very important to note before making your choice.
Where the personalised registration number has an age identifier (i.e. current style, prefix and suffix numbers see What style of registration number do you offer for sale?), you can only put that number onto a vehicle of equal age or newer. For example, if you purchase a 62 current style registration, it can only go onto a vehicle that was first registered as new on or after 1st September 2012. Please see the table below which shows the original issue dates of registration numbers.
current style registrations
prefix registrations
suffix registrations

No, the plate must be older, so if you had a 1998 S reg, your plate must be no newer than an s reg.

I was looking at older 1987 F reg plates to go on my 2004 car

I had "K 40 PDC" on my old 1998 e38, I oftenhad people commentating to me how tidy it was for a K plate!

Lost interest in the private plate thing and sold it with the car. :p
