looking to build a budget machine for a member of family, and been looking at OCs barebones systems.

BUT (and here is the question)

they all seem to come with 250W power supplies,

how can a 250W psu be even good enough to start a modern motherbaord, never mind run a system. surely 400w is minimum requisite for a modern day pc.

OR is this a new type of psu that produces more power than the rating somehow?

If you've been looking at the shuttles, then yes they do come with small power supplies. They are very effecient, but do not magically generate extra power. :p

You've got to remember that these aren't designed to be big high-end games mosters with a GTX or an Ultra in them, but rather small ecconomical desktops or HTPCs.

If you're just going to use the onboard graphics or maybe one of the £50 or less cards then they should be fine.

PK!

seconded.

nowadays this psu is enough as companies focused on keeping power usage efficient.

I have granted its fairly old a 250w psu from a old sony viao machine and when i say old i mean 2004 (?). it worked fine with the coupled system among other things ... a rather power hungry p4, geforce 4 ( yes i know :) ), 2xdvd drives, hard drive. and the rest of the normal stuff.

If in doubt research a shuttle you have in mind and check the power usage of the components.

mm

thanks for that guys, opens up many trains of thought, I have always looked for a minimum of 400W even for budget machines.

I take it you would be talking 1 hard drive 1 cdrom, and thats about all?

my old sony which i mentioned before had attached to it all the normal stuff and hard drive + 2 dvd rw drives + floppy

so there still should be enough juice.
