Probably a daft question......

This is probably a really stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway! I've just treated my self to a 6950 and with my old 260gtx I could plug both my monitors in to each dvi port and that was that. With the 6950'only one monitor will work. One monitor has a dvi connector and one has a vga with a dvi adaptor. I take it I need some sort of cable? The second monitor is handy and I would still like to use it if at all possible.

HI, you can connect 1st monitor via DVI, and second monitor using your VGA cable with DVI adapter.

Assuming the cables are connected and you are running Win7:
1) right-click on the desktop and select "Screen resolution"
2) then click on the "Detect" button. Does it find both displays?
3) tell Windows to extend your desktop onto the second monitor

That's the thing, plugging the second monitor in does nothing, it stays in standby and doesn't wake up. I've read something about the sockets being different (single link/dual link?) I'm confused

Did you just unhook the old cables from the 260gtx then attach to the 6950? Most 6950's(most cards in general) come with dvi>vga adaptors, did you try the one that came with the AMD card, is possible it has a different electronic output and the adaptor is marginally different.

For instance most AMD cards, from the 2900xt onward you needed to use the dvi to hdmi adaptor that came with AMD cards, they had a different output to a "generic" adaptor you could buy from anywhere, most cards since then came with a dvi>hdmi unless the partners released ultra cheapo no accessory versions of a normally lower end card or just some extra's would be missing due to a mistake.

I'd definately try the adaptors that came with the card, then try the opposite ports just in case. Also try the more ridiculous hdmi to dvi adaptor, then a vga added to that one. I know I had a few issues with my 5850's and getting vga working, I'm sure I got it working but have been back on 2x dvi screens and I can't remember how I got it working, I'm sure its possible.

I'll give the adapter that came with card a try and see what happens. I did look at that but it looks identical to the one I have, although It's certainly worth a try.

... then try the opposite ports just in case...

I'm using a 6870 and have just tried hooking up a second monitor to my desktop. I get exactly the same problem, so its not a problem with your card.

Second monitor is recognised and displays the extended desktop when connected using a DVI-DVI cable but not when using a (generic) DVI-VGA adapter and VGA-VGA cable. Unfortunately I have given away the DVI-VGA adapter that came with my card so cannot check with the ATI adapter.

I then swapped the connectors around on the card and "Bingo", both monitors now display the desktop. Sorted :D

Tried the new adaptor, same problem. I'm not even sure what you meen Creed? Is there a way around the problem apart from going out and buying a new monitor?

Did you try swapping them over? I was able to replicate your problem and fix it that way on my PC.

E.g.:
1) Switch both monitors on.
2) Boot up PC with DVI monitor connected to DVI Socket 1 on your 6950.
3) Once its booted up, move the DVI connector from Socket 1 into Socket 2.
4) Connect the VGA monitor to Socket 1 (using your VGA-DVI adapter).

You should now get the desktop on both monitors.
