how do you uninstall half life 2?

Go to steam, right click HL2 and select Delete local content.

If you're doing it to free up disk space, there's also the Source shared content in the Steam\SteamApps folder that can be deleted, basically anything with the word Source in it can go, but only if you aren't going to be playing any other Source based game like CS:S/DOD:S/HL2: DM etc.
