Probably a silly question - part way through build

I'm part way through my build having had to put it on hold whilst I finance something else. I haven't yet bought ram or cpu, I did buy a Z97N motherboard though. I was going to get an i7 4790k however I assume I'd now be better replacing the board with an X99 and going DDR4 and 5820K?

I was in the same boat.

Im going for the x99, although I will primarily be gaming on it, I also do quite a bit of encoding and rendering so the extra cores come in handy. The only gripe is the silly prices the DDR 4 is costing.

If you have the money for x99 and DDR4 then go for it, but if you are on a budget the 4790k will still be great.

Is it just due to availability or is there a reason why overclockers is only listing DDR4 in quad channel kits?

Presumably because they only sell Haswell-E which uses DDR4 and it has a quad channel memory controller.

I can't imagine many people buying Haswell-E and not making use of quad channel.

Ah I see. To be honest I haven't read up on it, I just noticed Haswell-E had been released and I was in a position in my build where I could go that route. I guess that means I'd have to swap my matx case as well and go back to atx as matx boards aren't going to have 4 slots for memory.

Looking at prices I think I'll continue with my intended components and get a 4790K. I'm only using it for web browsing and gaming. No point spending more, I don't think I'll see any benefit. I'm happy with my current i5 760 with gaming it's just my Mrs wants it as her laptop is on its last legs. I've already got the 797 motherboard so only need the cpu and memory.
