Probably a stupid question, but....

Would my girlfriends current i3 550 DDR3 system @ stock (3.2GHz) be faster all round than my E8400 DDR2 system @ 4.0GHz?

I can find a comparison between the two processors at stock, but it's hard to compare against an overclocked cpu isn't it...

Not knowing a great deal about this. But will give my advice on what I would do.

Can't you just check Wei in windows. Should give you a very very basic look at the Wei for the CPU.

Will get my coat lol

Because I didn't think of doing that before I pulled my E8400 bits out of the HAF and dropped her i3 setup in there... lol (the h55 board looks minuscule in there!!)

Just wondered if anyone could offer an opinion, nothing set in stone... just to shed a little dim light on it.

E8400 @ stock scores 2251, i3 550 @ stock scores 3089. Higher is better.

E8400
i3 550

If you're overclocking the E8400 by 33% then roughly add 33% on to the score (ends up just under 3000) so they do seem to end up pretty close but the i3 offers better power usage and is a newer chip so I would opt with that. I admit this is a very rough method because a lot depends on other factors of the overclock.

EDIT* What I'm trying say is I don't think the E8400 will beat the i3 at much but it might be able to match it at some things when overclocked.

That's the sort of answer I was after "about the same, don't bother swapping kit again!" easy :D hehe

Cheers pal.

All I need now is a P55 board so I can OC the i3 - any offers? :D
(zero budget so gifts welcome lol)
