Probably dumb memory question....

OK, I'll admit a complete lack of knowledge of memory architecture so this is probably a dumb question, but...

I presently have an i5 rig built around one of these:

Carrying 8GB of this:

I'm getting increasingly frequent out of memory errors, particularly with large image catalogues in Lightroom, so I planned to add more RAM. The mobo manual is a bit unhelpful in terms of specifics on maintaining dual channel compatibility but recommends matching density and type for stability.

So, once back in stock, if I stick these:

...in DIMMs 2 and 4, replacing the old RAM, can I re-deploy the old DIMMs in slots 1 an 3 to stably get 24GB and maintaning dual-channel benefits, or is this a silly idea and I should just ditch the 2x4GB sticks and go with the 16GB?

Thoughts from those with a more extensive understanding than myself welcome....

Just stick the new kit in the empty slots. It'll be fine, you don't even need to move the current sticks.

Yes, you have just to see that the mainboard can also support the amount of RAM if you did not check yet.
