Probably OcUK's strangest request ever...

I need some Sphagnum Peat moss - but everywhere I've looked, suppliers sell massive bags for around £5-10.

All I want is enough to fill a big pot - and I'm hoping that somebody on OcUK might know of a supplier, or even have some, so I can purchase it.

For the curious, it's for some Venus Flytrap seeds, and to top up an existing pot. :o

I thought you were going to make a water filter or something... Ray mears stylee'.
Wasn't going to make one - since day once, I've always had a suspicious looking setup.

Basically I catch water from a gutter, which goes into a funnel which has a coffee filter in it. Once the 2l bottle has filled, I filter it once more into another 2l bottle.

Sounds a mess on, but at least I know it's 100% natural!

Why not just get a big bag, use what you need then reseal and put the rest in a black bag in the garage or somewhere dark.

I seen your pics of the Venus fly traps, one you have is very large approx 20+ heads.

And less healthy than tap water probably...

Indeed

It's like those people who spend a fortune on bottled water thinking it is safer... when in fact tests show it is full of crap compared to tap water. It's a funny old world.

you should try our tap water, 99% more crap than any bottled water you care to mention.
personal being able to smell the clorine in the water does NOT put me at ease with drinking it.

If it was rain water... fair enough, but from a gutter
Nah, I know exactly where the water has gone - on the roof of a shed, into a clean gutter, and into the bottle. I know the gutter's clean, because I can see into it on a pair of stepladders. :)

The sole reason I bought the bottled water, was because I at least knew I could safely re-use the bottle and fill it with rainwater. I never gave my VFT the original bottled water.

Oh, and my VFT has no complaints about the rainwater I give it - and it's over 1.5 years old.

As you're in Darlington try Coast to Coast Exotics on North Road. Just give them a bell but I'm sure they'll have some.

Think I will, plus they're less than 15 minutes from me.

If not, then I'll try Elm Ridge garden centre on Carmel Road.

My 2nd venus fly trap has just died, dunno what i'm doing wrong but i can't get the wretched things to stay alive, let alone devour any annoying loud buzzing things...
Got any tips on looking after venus fly traps Basmic? What can i be doing wrong?

Talking of moss, thats all thats left in my venus fly trap pot, and i didn't even plant it there... :(

Looking after them...what did you use to water it? Boiled water, rain water, etc... .

Where was it kept?

I've always had mine on a window sill, during summer and winter. As you've probably gathered, it gets rainwater - no bottled or tapped stuff.

Feeding wise (my own method):-

- Catch a fly/insct, nothing too big.

- Make sure it's still moving, and put it in a clear container. Now stick the container in the freezer

- Wait until the insect has almost stopped moving, but not completely. The time will vary, from 1-5 minutes. Might be a good idea to time it for next time.

- Take the container to where the VFT is - but move quickly, because the insect is warming up slowly.

- Place the insect/fly in the trap. Hopefully the VFT trap will close in on the insect - if not, jiggle it a bit.

- When the insect gets back to warm temperature, it will start moving again - stimulating the VFT trap hairs, to tighten up on it and start the digestion process.

I keep it on a windowsill, which is usually fairly warm but can get a bit cold at night.

I gave it mostly tap (drinking) water, i did try rain water but it didn't seem to make any difference.

Whenever i fed it an insect, the trap would go brown and rot, this happened on both plants.

I always keep the soil wet.

I've got a sundew type thing which was doing very well for a time but thats dieing a bit too. Probably needs repotting.

I suppose i'll just get another one from somewhere and have another go. This one was doing nicely for a time...

If it were me, I'd replace the soil and clean the pot out, too

You using sphagum peat moss, or plain soil?
